Why Japanese Needs Counter Words

In English, you can simply say "three books" or "five cats." In Japanese, you cannot attach a number directly to a noun. Instead, you must insert a counter word (josushi, 助数詞) between the number and the noun, and the counter changes depending on what you are counting. Saying "hon wo san" (three books) without the proper counter sounds ungrammatical to native ears. You need to say "hon wo san-satsu" (本を三冊), where satsu is the counter for bound volumes.

Japanese has hundreds of counter words, but do not panic. In daily life, about 15 to 20 counters cover the vast majority of situations. Learning these core counters is manageable and will immediately improve your spoken Japanese.

The Universal Counter: -tsu

When you do not know the specific counter for an object, you can often use the native Japanese counting system: hitotsu (一つ, 1), futatsu (二つ, 2), mittsu (三つ, 3), yottsu (四つ, 4), itsutsu (五つ, 5), muttsu (六つ, 6), nanatsu (七つ, 7), yattsu (八つ, 8), kokonotsu (九つ, 9), too (十, 10). This system works for most general objects and is your safety net when the specific counter escapes you. However, it only goes up to ten.

Essential Counters for People

Counting people uses the counter -nin (人): san-nin (三人, 3 people), go-nin (五人, 5 people). But the first two numbers are irregular: hitori (一人, 1 person) and futari (二人, 2 people). These irregular forms are among the first counters every learner should memorize.

Counters for Animals

Small animals use -hiki / -biki / -piki (匹): ippiki (1), nihiki (2), sanbiki (3). Large animals like horses and elephants use -tou (頭): ittou (1), nitou (2), santou (3). Birds and rabbits use -wa (羽): ichiwa (1), niwa (2), sanwa (3). Yes, rabbits use the bird counter for historical reasons.
